Sweet Cherry Details

So sweet. So good.

Even people who don’t usually like sweet fruit go weak at the mention of delicious sun-ripened cherries. That’s because cherries also come in a sour version. Starting in June, the trees first bear sweet cherries with particularly soft and juicy flesh. Then, if left to mature for a few months in midsummer, the flesh becomes firmer and thus also more sour.

The first cherries were brought to Europe from their country of origin in the year 74 BC: the Roman general Lukullus brought some to Italy from the port city of Kerasos (today Giresun in Turkey), where they are said to have been cultivated since 400 BC. These plants are the predecessors of today’s sweet cherries. From Italy, the cherries were spread further by the Romans until they finally arrived in northern Europe. This sun-ripened origin is clearly tasted in SWEET CHERRY.
